Call of Duty's modern offerings have struggled with giving players affordable file sizes for some time, but the recent Black Ops 6 Season 3 update has pushed it too far.
We’re sitting at the peak of ’s era so far, with the game’s Season 3 update introducing a new Zombies map full of secrets, plus heaps of new maps and weapons to get stuck into. There is still a delay for fans as they wait eagerly to return to Verdansk when the rolls around, but disregarding that, we’re standing at the start of a very exciting time to be a Call of Duty fan.
That doesn’t mean that the ongoing struggles of the franchise have vanished, though, and players still have problems trying to actually install the game with its needlessly complicated Call of Duty HQ system, containing many of the crucial files for all of the franchise’s experience, regardless of if you care for them or not. It’s an irritating trend in gaming that has drastically affected the FPS series, and as the new update hits, it’s clear that the issue has never been worse.

High StoreA new in the Call of Duty subreddit has exposed that the file sizes of recent updates have pushed the franchise too far, as user u/MidNightMoon_x reports that Call of Duty HQ has now reached a total of 439.5GB on the , meaning that players can’t have all of the current Call of Duty titles on the console at once without external storage. Of course, this number will likely contain one or both of the most recent Modern Warfare reboot games, but it doesn’t help if Call of Duty cares to keep players engaged with its historic titles.
Our own research has found that a similar story is the case on , with ’s final download size reaching 329GB with everything installed. It’s a gnarly sum for many players to suffer with, forcing down the number of games they can keep installed to an increasing minimum.
Players have been taking to the comments of the original post, to explain that sometimes, it isn’t as simple as just uninstalling some of the older content. “The people saying to uninstall the campaigns don't get it,| says u/Firm_Door_8214. “Some people like me revisit the campaign all the time of not just certain fun missions.”
“Wow,” adds u/SteelToeLion. “I’m glad I opted to play HD2 where the entire game is a cutscene and every moment looks and feels better than COD. And it’s literally 10x smaller.”
This is an issue that has been present for all of Call of Duty’s modern era, with Call of Duty HQ exacerbating problems with storage space, no matter the console or platform. It’s no wonder that some players have begun to theorise that these huge file sizes are themselves a strategy to ensure that nobody is able to keep a game and its competitor on the same device. It looks like we have to suffer a little longer.
