Do you remember those school days, when the teacher used to teach and some friends sitting on the back bench used to be lost in their world? Now this kind of scene is going to change in a major state of the country. This state is Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu government has now ordered to make the seating arrangement of students in all government schools like the Tamil letter Pa or the English letter U. The logic behind this is that this will not only change the seating system, but it will also have a good effect on studies. Now discussions have started all over the country regarding this. That is, now backbenchers will not come out of Tamil Nadu.
U-shaped Classroom Seating: Why was this decision taken?
The Tamil Nadu School Education Department believes that the right seating arrangement in the classroom plays an important role in improving studies, increasing interaction among students, and making them feel comfortable. In this order issued recently, it has been clearly stated that in traditional classrooms, students sitting on the back benches often had difficulty in making direct contact with the teacher.
Now with the new arrangement, those back benches have been eliminated, so that every student can feel themselves in the first row. The order states that this will make it easier for the students to see and make eye contact with the teacher, the teacher will be able to move around the class easily, and student participation will increase.
Classroom Innovation: Study will become 'conversation', not lecture
The biggest advantage of this U-shaped arrangement is that all the students are able to face each other and the teacher, which promotes conversation and collaboration. Apart from this, this U-shape provides space in the middle of the class, where many types of role plays, science experiments, and other interactive activities can be done.
Kerala Inspiration: This initiative got inspiration from Kerala
This change is inspired to some extent by a similar development in Kerala, where schools started adopting a semi-circular seating arrangement, inspired by the 2024 Malayalam film 'Sthanarthi Srikuttan'. The film tells the story of a backbencher who suggests a U-shaped seating arrangement during school elections.
The film inspired many institutions to redesign classrooms in real life. Rama Vilasom Vocational Higher Secondary School (RVGHSS) was one of the first schools to adopt this model. State Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar is also part of the management of the school.
