Vice Chancellor (VC) of Odisha's famous Berhampur University, Gitanjali Das, became a victim of cyber fraud. The accused put her under 'digital arrest' by posing as Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials and defrauded her of Rs 14 lakh. Police have arrested two people from Gujarat in this case.
What is the whole matter?
The incident took place in February. From February 14 to February 22, VC Gitanjali Das received continuous calls claiming that she was trapped in a money laundering case and she would have to transfer all her money for the investigation. In a state of fear and confusion, Das transferred a total of Rs 14 lakh.
A few days later, the fraudsters returned Rs 80 thousand to her and assured them that the remaining amount would be returned after the investigation was completed. When the money was not returned, she complained to the police on February 24.
Two accused arrested from Gujarat
The police took action and arrested two accused, Bhutiya Jenil Jaisukhbhai (23) and Vishwajitsinh Gohil (21) from Bhavnagar in Gujarat. The accused were brought to Berhampur on Saturday on a five-day transit remand.
The police have recovered several important pieces of evidence including mobile phones, and Aadhar cards from the accused.
Connection with a big cybercrime gang
Berhampur Superintendent of Police Sarvana Vivek M said that these accused are part of a big cybercrime gang, which has committed such frauds in many parts of the country. The police have now started searching for other members of the gang and are investigating the entire money trail.
