In a heart breaking incident that took place Wednesday night, a 24 year old girl Udita died of cardiac arrest in her hostel. She was a fifth year BA LLB staying in Sarojini hostel of the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala in Punjab.
At 10:45 PM she collapsed in the corridor after which she was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Patiala where the doctors declared her dead on arrival. The university said that the ambulance arrived within minutes to take Udita to the hospital.
On the other hand, her fellow students contradicted the university’s statement and pointed out that there might have been some delay and negligence in the emergency response . One student speaking anonymously said that though the ambulance was present on the campus it still took nearly 40 minutes to reach Udita and a second student was reported saying that by TOI, that the wheelchair in the hostel was locked and the keys for it could not be located in time.
Students pointed out the lack of medical services at night. According to students, the university health centre does not provide emergency services after 10PM and the doctor assigned to the health centre was unavailable at the time of the incident. These alleged incidents might have impacted Udita’s survival.
The exact cause of Udita's death will be determined following the post-mortem report, which is still pending. According to the Station House Officer of Bakshiwala Police Station in Patiala, Udita was a resident of Rohtak. A post-mortem examination has been completed, the body has been handed over to the family, and a case has been registered to facilitate further investigation.
The incident has cast a pall over the university, where examinations had only just resumed on May 21 after a prior delay caused by escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan. In the wake of Udita’s death, the exam scheduled for May 22 was cancelled, and a new date has not yet been announced.
As the investigation unfolds, the university administration is facing increasing scrutiny from students, particularly regarding the adequacy of its emergency response measures. The university has expressed its condolences over the student's sudden passing and has scheduled a prayer meeting for Friday afternoon.
