IPL 2025: CSK skipper MS Dhoni is already eyeing next season as playoff chances diminish

Chennai Super Kings' stay at the bottom of the table continued as they suffered their sixth loss in eight matches on Sunday. The five-time champions went down to Mumbai Indians by nine wickets at the Wankhede.

"We are just trying to plug in the holes, with all the games that are in front of us that we are supposed to win, we just take it one game at a time and if we lose a few, what will be important for us is to get the right combination for next year," Dhoni said.

"What we need to realise is that we are successful because we play good cricket and at the same time when we are not playing good cricket what is important is not to get too emotional about it and at the same time you want to be practical. There have been instances, one of the seasons I think 2020 has not been great for us but we need to see whether we are playing the right form of cricket, whether we are applying ourselves," he added.

CSK’s recent form has been dismal. They've lost four consecutive games, and their last win came against Lucknow Super Giants last week. The lack of momentum and inability to close out matches has been their Achilles heel this season. The bowling unit has been expensive, while the batting order has struggled to fire collectively.

What CSK need to qualify?
For CSK to realistically stay in the hunt, they need to:

- Win at least 5 out of 6 remaining games.

- Drastically improve their net run rate.

- Chances would get better if teams like SRH, RR, and KKR continue to drop points.

Rohit Sharma hits form

Meanwhile, India's ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma finally found form as he smashed his way to an unbeaten 76 to lead Mumbai Indians to a comfortable nine-wicket win.

Sharma had failed to make a big score while trying to maximise the powerplay overs, however, on Sunday his knock included six sixes and four fours to end his slump.

"He knew what he needs to do and (it's) just a tiny thing that he gets going and then gets through the first three-four overs," MI coach Mahela Jayawardene said after the win lifted Mumbai to sixth in the 10-team league.

"Once he comes off like that, you know that he's going to change the game, the momentum and that's going to filter down to the rest of the boys as well. So (we are) pretty happy how he never changes approach," Jayawardene added.

Sharma, who led MI to five IPL trophies, was awarded Player of the Match for his impressive innings

"I know it's been a little while but like I said, if you start doubting yourself, you're only going to put pressure on yourself," Sharma said.
