In 2003, when Salman Khan’s Tere Naam title track was released, it quickly became a cult classic. Even today, it remains one of the most-played songs during breakups. But nobody knows the emotional story behind how the song became iconic and the inspiration that fuelled the lyrics. Recently, lyricist Sameer Anjaan revealed the backstory behind the song’s creation, and it's none other than Salman Khan’s real-life breakup with Aishwarya Rai.
Who's the inspiration behind Tere Naam title track?
In a candid conversation, Sameer revealed that the title track of Tere Naam was not originally written with Salman in mind. However, what eventually took shape mirrored Salman's own heartbreak following his breakup with Aishwarya Rai. Speaking to Shubhankar Mishra, Sameer shared that Salman would often sing the track with composer Himesh Reshammiya and break down in tears before filming his scenes.
Sometimes, Salman would sing it himself and get emotional, especially during the line, "Kyu kisi ko wafa ke badle wafa nahi milti." He felt the song truly reflected his pain and wished Aishwarya Rai would hear it.
“Now you’ve really hit me with this song. Why doesn’t one get loyalty in return for loyalty?” Salman reportedly said during those emotional moments. Sameer added that the actor’s real emotions helped elevate the song to something truly unforgettable.
More about Salman Khan's relationship with Aishwarya Rai
For those unfamiliar, Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai were rumoured to be in a relationship after their film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999). Their breakup has long been a subject of public interest, and just recently, more details have resurfaced. In a conversation with Vickey Lalwani on YouTube, ad filmmaker Prahlad Kakkar, who lived in the same building as Aishwarya at the time, revealed that Salman was deeply obsessed.
He recalled Salman creating dramatic scenes in the building’s foyer, including banging his head against walls out of frustration. According to him, the relationship had ended long before it became official, and the breakup was a "relief" for everyone involved, including Aishwarya’s family.
Prahlad also claimed that after the breakup, Aishwarya felt abandoned by the film industry, possibly due to Salman’s strong influence in Bollywood at the time.
Meanwhile, on the professional front, Salman Khan is currently filming his next project, The Battle of Galwan.
