Odisha continues to reel under an intense heatwave, with Jharsuguda recording the highest temperature of the season at 46.2°C on April 22, 2025, the highest in the state since 1953. In at least 15 other locations across Odisha, temperatures ranged between 40°C and 43°C.

According to Dr. Manorama Mohanty, Director of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bhubaneswar, daytime temperatures are expected to rise by 2°C to 4°C between April 22 and April 26. No significant change is expected for the following two days, after which a drop of 2°C to 4°C is likely. Heatwave conditions, combined with hot and humid weather and warm nights, are forecast to persist across the state until April 26.

In response to the extreme heat, the Odisha government on Tuesday announced that there will be no power cuts during peak summer hours this year. Deputy Chief Minister K.V. Singh Deo, who also holds the Energy portfolio, stated that power distribution companies have been directed to avoid electricity disruptions, especially during the daytime.

To address the growing drinking water crisis, the government has decided to install 21,300 new tube wells across the state. Drinking Water Minister Rabi Narayan Naik noted that while Odisha currently has around 5.2 lakh tube wells, about 36% are defunct due to falling groundwater levels. Additionally, the government is likely to revise the summer vacation schedule for schools in view of the ongoing severe heat wave.
