Mumbai Local Train Update: Central Railway To Replace 14 Non-AC Trains With AC Locals On Main Line From April 16; Check Full Schedule

After initial resistance , the popularity of air-conditioned (AC) local trains on Central Railway's Mumbai division has surged, with a more than 30% increase in both passenger count and revenue during 2024. In response to the growing demand, Central Railway (CR) has decided to replace 14 non-AC local trains with AC locals starting Wednesday.

An official from Central Railway confirmed the update, stating, “Central Railway is set to replace 14 non-air-conditioned local services by air-conditioned local train services on the Main Line starting April 16, 2025.”

With the addition, the number of AC local services on the Main Line will increase from 66 to 80 on weekdays, aimed at enhancing passenger comfort during Mumbai’s sweltering weather conditions. Despite the upgrade, the total number of suburban train services will remain unchanged at 1,810 daily.

These AC  local trains will operate Monday through Saturday, while the same services will run with non-AC rakes on Sundays and designated holidays.

"This strategic expansion is aimed at encouraging more commuters to opt for AC services, which offer a smoother" said an official.

In 2024, a total of 2.84 crore passengers traveled in air-conditioned local trains, which is around 30 percent more than in 2023. In 2023, the total number of AC local train passengers on Central Railway (CR) was 2.09 crore. Similarly, revenue from AC local trains on CR in 2024 was Rs 124.01 crore, which is around 30 percent more than in 2023. In 2023, CR earned revenue of Rs 94.07 crore from the air-conditioned local trains.
