Former India pace spearhead Zaheer Khan has made his stance clear on potentially taking over as head coach of Team India — and he’s open to the idea. While currently serving as a mentor for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025, Zaheer recently addressed the topic during an event in Kolkata, where he appeared alongside LSG captain Rishabh Pant and batter Nicholas Pooran.

"Not Applying, But Would Be Honoured"

When asked if he would like to become the head coach of Team India in the future, Zaheer said:

“I’m not applying. But if I am asked, I’d definitely consider it. It would be an honour.”

The statement has sparked speculation, especially with coaching roles often coming under scrutiny after major tournaments. Given Zaheer’s vast experience and calm leadership style, many believe he could be a strong candidate for the job in the future.

Zaheer’s Take on Test Cricket’s Future

Addressing concerns about the global decline in Test cricket’s popularity, Zaheer offered a positive perspective:

“I’m not worried. In fact, it’s time to let Tests, ODIs, and T20s co-exist. Test cricket still has a loyal following. We’re seeing more results and exciting matches now. The 5-match Test series between strong teams is a step in the right direction.”

On the IPL’s Impact on Young Talent

Zaheer also spoke passionately about the IPL’s role in nurturing young talent.

“The determination and hunger among the youth really excites me. The IPL has created a massive platform. From 600-800 players registering in 2008 to over 1600 in the last mega auction — that tells you the story of growth.”

He highlighted how IPL has become a stepping stone for uncapped players:

“The dream of playing in the IPL pushes young players to work harder and eventually reach the national team. In the dressing room, you can see how eager these youngsters are to learn from international stars like Pooran or Pant. That’s the real strength of Indian cricket right now.”

Satisfaction in Mentorship

Zaheer concluded by saying that working with such enthusiastic young cricketers brings him immense satisfaction — a hint that he’s already laying the groundwork for a bigger coaching role in Indian cricket.
