David Beckham's health woes after surprise hospital stint – from cracked vertebrae to OCD

Send Push

David Beckham was recently taken to the hospital after reportedly struggling with a wrist injury from over two decades ago. Victoria shared a picture of the football star smiling for the camera in a hospital bed while wearing a sling on his arm as she captioned the post: "Get well soon, Daddy."

Although the couple have yet to reveal the exact cause of the injury, it has been said his wrist issues stemmed from a broken wrist he sustained 22 years ago during a friendly football match against South Africa in 2003. A recent x-ray reportedly showed a screw, which was used at the time, embedded in his forearm after it failed to dissolve properly.

The game saw him fall awkwardly and he was substituted early in the second half before being taken to the hospital.

With his lengthy football career, David has sustained multiple injuries over the years. He's been in the game for over 20 years, with 265 appearances for Manchester United and 115 for England.

He recently admitted his body is showing significant signs of "wear and tear". He said one particular area of his body gives him the "most grief" day-to-day.

He told Men's Health: "It's actually my back and left hip that give me the most grief. I've had it X-rayed, MRI'd – it's just wear and tear."

David said that some of the treatment he underwent to keep him on the field could have done long-term harm. He added: "Unfortunately, I did have a lot of injections and I don't think it's a good thing."

During his final game for Real Madrid, he had three cortisone injections in his ankle. However, he wouldn't have been able to play the game at all without them. David explained: "Certain parts of my body were a real mess."

After a match in Los Angeles, he experienced back pain and found out he cracked his vertebra. "I went for a scan and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I was insisting there was something not right there – I could feel it." He found out about the break after the second examination. "It was a bad one," David recalls.

His wrist also bothers him to this day, with the star recently being pictured in the hospital. The screw holding his broken bones together should have already dissolved but it didn't.

Meanwhile, the star revealed he struggled with obsessive compulsive disorder in an interview with ITV 19 years ago. He said: "I've got this obsessive compulsive disorder where I have to have everything in a straight line or everything has to be in pairs. Everything has to be perfect."

In his Netflix documentary, David said he spends hours cleaning the house and admitted it gets "exhausting" and even "annoys his wife sometimes".

"When I go to bed, I know that everything has to be in its place. It’s like... the shoes have to be in pairs. Everything has to be perfect," he said.

"It’s tiring going around to every single candle and cleaning it and clipping the wick. I clip the candle wicks, I clean the glass, that’s my pet hate, the smoke around the inside of a candle."
