HMRC warning as Brits told to report two types of phone call

Brits have been issued a warning to look out for two types of phone call. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) explained that these could be from scammers, trying to con you out of money.

According to Citizens Advice, around nine million people in the UK get caught out by scammers every year. And as technology evolves it can be harder to tell what’s a scam and what is legitimate.

In a post made to social media platform X, HMRC warned that this could be the worst time of year for fraudulent activity. It said: “Scammers target individuals when they know people are getting ready to file their tax returns.” On the Government website, HMRC listed ways to spot a scam.

These include “suspicious” phone calls. HMRC said it would never:

• Leave a voicemail threatening legal action
• Threaten arrest

Therefore, if you get a supposed call from HMRC involving either of these, you should report it. You can report a suspicious phone call via the Government website here.

“Use the online form to tell HMRC if you’ve received a phone call you do not think is genuine,” HMRC says. “You’ll need to give your email address.

“We may share your email address and phone number with other organisations to close down the scam.” Alternatively, you can call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040, or, if you live in Scotland, call 101.

Other ways to know the call is likely a con is if the caller:

• Rushes you
• Is threatening
• Is unexpected
• Asks for personal information like bank details
• Tells you to transfer money
• Offers a refund, tax rebate or grant
