's cause of death has finally been c. Gene, 95, was found dead with his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, with the couple's bodies discovered in separate rooms of their Santa Fe, New Mexico home on February 26. Betsy's cause of death was previously revealed to be Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare rodent-borne disease.
She is thought to have died around a week before her husband. Gene, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, is thought to have died on February 18, as that is when his pacemaker stopped recording. As Gene's autopsy confirmed his cause of death, as a report stated he had a "history of congestive heart failure" and suffered from "severe chronic hypertensive changes, kidneys."
But another harrowing discovery found he had acetone in his stomach, which indicates he had not eaten at all in the time between Betsy's death and his own. It appears the actor was incapable of taking care of himself or their three dogs, and may not have even realised Betsy was dead.
One of their dogs was found diseased from starvation and dehydration, while another was "guarding" Betsy's body and a third was found roaming the property.
Their home was also found in a "complete mess", with droppings and clutter found in every room in shocking videos, indicating how Betsy may have contracted the rare hantavirus disease.
The report stated the acetone, which is a solvent used for chemicals is "also a product of diabetic- and fasting-induced ketoacidosis as well as a metabolite following isopropanol ingestion." His levels were at 5.3 mg/dl, while normal endogenous acetone levels in blood are up to 0.3 mg/dL. These findings are consisted with a lengthy time of fasting.
Symptoms of high levels of acetone in the body are stomach pain, sleepiness and confusion, being sick or feeling nauseous, and blurred vision.
The autopsy also conclude Gene had "coronary artery stents and a bypass graft, as well as a previous aortic valve replacement."
