New Frankenstein adaptation is a 'masterpiece' and coming to Netflix

The new adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein has been hailed as a "masterpiece", and it is coming to Netflix very soon. Frankenstein is a 2025 American Gothic science fiction film written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, and based on Mary Shelley's 1818 novel of the same name.

The film stars Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Lauren Collins, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz. The film's synopsis reads: "Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro adapts Mary Shelley's classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation."

Rachel Leishman of The Mary Sue described the film as "Guillermo del Toro's masterpiece" and added: "Frankenstein is a story we all know, and making it feel fresh and new is nearly impossible. And yet del Toro's work understands the deeper themes present in Shelley's novel and captures the essence of her work in stunning moments, all to remind us how to be human."

The film has an impressive rating of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes already, with the critics' consensus stating: "Finding the humanity in one of cinema's most iconic monsters, Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein is a lavish epic that gets its most invigorating volts from Jacob Elordi's standout performance."

One critic said: "Frankenstein is an elegant, compassionate adaptation of a beloved text with unmatched influence. Del Toro doesn't simply outdo himself with the presentation; truly, the film is a spectacle for the eyes."

A second said: "In del Toro's Frankenstein, his artistry and passion are on full display, crafting a gothic horror masterpiece with an emotional jolt."

"In Frankenstein, he has created a powerfully entertaining, existential new version of an old story -- not exactly producing something totally unique, but enlivening the familiar tale with haunting performances and some truly striking images," a third added.

Another critic wrote in their review: "Made on an epic scale with lavish sets and costumes and a gorgeously textured Alexandre Desplat score, Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of the Mary Shelley classic is both involving and entertaining."

Frankenstein is out in select cinemas now but will drop on Netflix on November 7.
