Oasis paid tribute to the late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota during the first show of their comeback tour in Cardiff. Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva, were killed in a car collision in Spain in the early hours of Thursday morning.
A touching tribute to the Portugal international was paid during the first gig of Oasis' tour on Friday night. Gallagher brothers Liam and Noel, who are both Manchester City fans, paused their gig towards the end of the event at the Principality Stadium. Jota's No. 20 Liverpool shirt appeared on a big screen behind the duo as fans paid their respects. Oasis's Live Forever played over the top in a hugely emotive moment. Warm-up act, Liverpool-based band Cast, also devoted part of their set to Jota and Silva. Both gestures were met with applause and cheers from those in attendance.
Jota's death has prompted tributes from all around the world. His close friends and international team-mates Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo were in tears as they participated in a minute's applause ahead of Al-Hilal's Club World Cup match against Fluminense this evening.
Many of Jota's former Liverpool colleagues have paid their respects. Ex-captain Jordan Henderson was at Anfield today as tens of thousands of fans laid flowers and other tributes for the player, who helped the Reds win the Premier League last season.
Liverpool's current squad have had their pre-season plans delayed and they are expected to attend the funeral of Jota and Silva tomorrow. A flight from the UK has reportedly been charted by the Merseyside club. Private and public wakes were held today in their hometown of Gondomar, near Porto.
Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool, having joined from Wolves in 2020. He and Silva were found dead in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, in the early hours of Thursday morning. Silva, who was 25, was playing as an attacking midfielder for Portuguese second division team Penafiel.
Oasis performed the first of their 41-gig tour on Friday night. They are set to play at the same venue tomorrow before heading to Heaton Park in Manchester next week. It was the first time that Liam and Noel Gallagher had shared a stage in 16 years.
