'Underrated' WW2 movie starring Daniel Craig available to watch now on Netflix

An "underrated" film starring is now available to watch on Netflix. Defiance tells the true story of a group of Jews living in a forest in a battle for survival. The Bielski brothers, Tuvia, the Bond actor's character; Zus, played by Liev Schreiber; and Asael, portrayed by Jamie Bell, saved an estimated 1,236 lives during the Holocaust. Directed by Edward Zwick, who also made Blood Diamond and The Last Samurai, the 2008 movie is composed of a mix of brutal and tender moments, and its music was nominated for an Oscar.

One viewer took to Reddit to say that Defiance ranks alongside a classic starring Jude Law as a Soviet soldier - Enemy at the Gates - as the "most underrated" World War 2 movies. Someone else ranked it as one of their favourite World War 2 or Holocaust films. They added: "Surprised to see that many haven't seen or heard of it tbh".

Another account seemed to summarise the consensus, calling it a "solid war flick" and rating it a respectable 7/10.

This echoes Defiance's rating on IMDb - 7.1/10.

The overall view of those that have seen the film seems to be that it is a "solid" effort, but also "not too memorable", which is why "no one talks about it".

A different post read: "It was good but could have been great."

Rotten Tomatoes says critics have given the flick a rating of 58%.

The site adds in a summary of their thoughts: "Professionally made but artistically uninspired, Ed Zwick's story of Jews surviving WWII in the Belarus forest lacks the emotional punch of the actual history."

Some have highlighted that there are also books about the Bielskis, and maybe they are more accurate than the film.

One person wrote on IMDb: "I enjoyed 'Defiance' immensely - there was humor and heartache, with a liberal dose of action. Not a brainless action movie, enough of a story to make it memorable, and fast-paced enough to keep me from becoming bored.

"On the other hand, although the movie captures the spirit of the story, it is far from a documentary, and I'd have preferred a more historically accurate film. I'm biased, though - I read the Peter Duffy book 'Bielski Brothers' soon after it was released - and I found the real story even more compelling than the Hollywood version.

"Nonetheless, I live in the real world where directors have to shoot on a budget, and this was a good, diverting peek into a story that was long overdue to be told."
