Aizawl: A landmark achievement in Mizoram's infrastructure history was marked on Monday with the launching of a two-lane, 100-metre network arch bridge over the Tlawng river, connecting Lengpui Airport to the state capital Aizawl, as well as linking Tripura by crossing Mamit district.

The steel structure, technically termed as — Basket Handle Network Arch Bridge — was hoisted after a special prayer ceremony was held to seek divine intervention. Weighing 432 metric tonnes, the structure was lifted using a ropeway system — a rare and technically demanding method. According to executives of the company executing the project, this is the first time in India that such a massive load has been transported across a river using this technique.

The construction of the bridge began in March 2021 with an initial target to complete it within two years. However, the Covid-19 pandemic delayed the progress of the work. When the first attempt failed, it caused widespread concern. Acknowledging the risks involved, the engineers and workers continued their rituals but also sought the blessing of a Christian priest. At their request, the PWD invited Presbyterian church pastor of Lengpui pastoral, Rev Lalchungnunga Hauhnar, to conduct a special prayer.

Following the launch, the bridge deck will be concreted one foot at a time. Additional work, including surface finishing, lighting and footpath, are expected to be completed within 3 months.
