Aizawl: The central committee of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) on Tuesday said the civil society is closely monitoring investigation against Henry Lalbiakzinga Chhundeng and his accomplices, arrested on March 14 and 15, for allegedly trafficking heroin worth over Rs 1.41 crore.

The committee said they want appropriate punishment for the accused.

Chhundeng is a wealthy businessman who trades in infant and children's garments, toys and other related goods in Aizawl.

The central committeeof the YMA expressed appreciation to the police for immediately nabbing the accused persons saying the civil society is proud of the police department.

"Our anger is directed towards drug traffickers and pushers who are spoiling the lives of many youths for their own pecuniary benefits," the YMA said in a press statement, adding the culprits should be given appropriate punishment under the law of the land.

The central YMA also lauded the decision of its units in Kulikawn and Ramhlun North localities of Aizawl for closing down the shops of the businessman in their respected neighbourhoods.

In one of the biggest haul in the state, Mizoram Police personnel posted at Zokhawthar village bordering Myanmar in Champhai district seized 4.722kg of heroin estimated to be worth over Rs. 1.41 crore and arrested six suspects on March 14, while subsequent probe resulted in the arrest of two more persons, including the well-known businessman on the next day.

As the police delayed announcement of the progress of the probe because of fear of hampering investigations, there had been a public outcry suspecting that the cops might try to hush up the case due to the involvement of a rich and well-known accused.
