Andhra Pradesh's cabinet has approved the allotment of 21.16 acres of land to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Visakhapatnam for a symbolic price of just 99 paisa, as part of efforts to transform the port city into a major IT hub.
The decision, reported by MoneyControl, comes after months of continuous discussions between state officials and the IT giant following IT Minister Nara Lokesh 's initial pitch during a visit to Tata headquarters in Mumbai in October 2024.
"This is our Sanand moment for the IT sector," a government official told reporters, drawing parallels to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's famous allocation of land to Tata Motors for 99 paisa during his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister.
TCS’ Vishakhapatman facility could take 2-3 years for completion, will employ 10,000 people
TCS is expected to begin operations in Visakhapatnam within 90 days, initially from a rented building while the permanent facility is being constructed. The Indian Express reports that the permanent campus will eventually house 10,000 employees, though construction could take two to three years.
The minister had previously stated that TCS establishing a presence in Visakhapatnam marks "the beginning of turning the port city into an IT and technology hub." The state government aims to create at least 500,000 jobs in the IT sector over the next five years.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu , who recently attended the World Economic Forum at Davos, has emphasized that "Visakhapatnam will witness an IT revolution" once TCS establishes its unit there.
The government is also reportedly in discussions with other tech companies looking to expand their operations, with hopes of establishing Visakhapatnam as a key technology destination in India.
