NEW DELHI: A day after SC remarked that it was facing allegations of encroaching on the turf of the executive, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar Tuesday doubled down on his criticism of " judicial overreach ", reiterating the supremacy of Parliament.
"Elected representatives are the ultimate masters as to what the Constitution's content will be. There is no visualisation in the Constitution of any authority above Parliament," Dhankhar said at a Delhi University event. He said the Preamble of the Constitution starts with "We the People", which signifies the importance of citizens and their representatives.
Taking a dig at the judiciary for acquiescing in suspension of fundamental rights during Emergency, Dhankhar said, "I call it the darkest period because the highest court of the land held (suspension of fundamental rights), ignoring the verdict of nine HCs..."
