Would Californians back potential Kamala Harris bid for governor? Here's what survey found

Policy makers in California are "indifferent" about a potential gubernatorial bid by Kamala Harris, America's former vice president who is from the state, a survey has found.

The poll, conducted by Politico and UC Berkeley’s Citrin Center, interviewed California's registered voters and a selected group of policy insiders, including lawmakers, as well as state and federal government staffers, the New York Post reported.

Among policy influencers, 36 per cent replied they would be "indifferent" about Harris as governor, while 22 per cent said they were "mostly excited" and 20 per cent were "irritated." Only 4 per cent said they would be "outraged."

On the other hand, 33 per cent of the surveyed registered voters expressed "joy" about the possibility of Harris running for governor.

Meanwhile, among California's independent voters, 26 per cent replied they would be "irritated" and 21 per cent said they felt "hopeless."

Among Latino voters who were interviewed, 19 per cent said they were "hopeless" about the former vice president running in California, while 18 per cent of Asian voters who participated in the survey said they felt “irritated” by Harris possibly launching a bid.

While Harris has not officially declared her candidacy in her home state, she has vowed to remain active in politics since losing to Donald Trump in the November 2024 US presidential election. She is also reportedly weighing a bid for the presidency again, in 2028.

As vice president to Joe Biden, Harris became the 2024 Democratic nominee for president a month after Biden chose not to seek re-election, following his disastrous debate performance against Trump.
