Ludhiana: As part of a special operation conducted across the state by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and automatic driving test and licence centres, four private agents and a private peon were arrested in Ludhiana for bribery. It is said that the accused were extorting money from people on the pretext of getting their driving licences made. The arrests were made by Vigilance Bureau, Ludhiana Range and Vigilance Bureau (Economic Offences Wing).
The accused arrested by VB EOW are Pankaj Arora, a private agent from Jamalpur, Deepak Kumar, a peon from Bindraban Road, and Manish Kumar, a private agent from Noorwala Road. VB officials recovered Rs 3,500, Rs 1,500, and Rs 2,500 respectively from them. Further, VB Ludhiana Range also arrested two private agents: Taisiff Ahmed Ansari of Tajpur Road and Honey Arora of Adarsh Nagar.
The officials said that multiple complaints had been received at the anti-corruption helpline of the Punjab government against several individuals who, on the pretext of getting driving licences, were duping people. All these agents allegedly demanded Rs 5,500 to Rs 20,000 from applicants to get driving licences made and were caught red-handed. Separate FIRs were lodged against them at the VB EOW and Ludhiana Range office.
